Last week, I outlined some time management boards to make things more efficient. One of the items on my list was to get everything you could; take the detailed notes, listen carefully to the lecture and record the lectures for the next audition. These tips are great, but I’ll be the first to admit that even a life like this is a hacker, like me, who is prone to a hypnotic drone of a boring lecture. We’re all sleepy in class, whether it’s due to a lack of rest or an uninteresting topic. However, it is difficult to see that sleep in a class is one of the final waste of time in college. So let’ s take the main reason why we sleep in the class, not sleep at night …
The absolute best way to make sure you’re awake and attentive in the classroom is to make sure you’ve slept for more than six hours the day before. Being well rested is extremely important not only for not sleeping in class, but also for your general health. Of course, you already know that, so I’m not leaving this tape just a joke. Sleep occurs in cycles. A full cycle of sleep consists of five separate stages, four of which are classified as non-REM sleef, and one (last) is when the REM sleee occurs. When you go to bed, your body starts in a state of calm awakening. Think of this as a preliminary step, it only occurs just before the start of the first cycle (hopefully!). As long as you don’t sleep, your body’s starting to go through five cycles of sleep. During the first four non-REM cycles, your brain activity is slowly declining, your heart rate is slowing down, and the sleep you sleep in is deepening. When you get into the third stage, the body temperature actually falls slightly, and in the fourth step, you get into the most inactive state. It is also the state of a deep sleep. The first four stages accounted for almost 75 per cent of the total sleep. The fifth state is the REM state, and in this state the activity of the brain increases dramatically, almost to the level in which you woke up. Dreams are taking place in this condition, and your brain immobiles your body to prevent your dream actions …
So what does all this do to avoid waking up in class? The key point here is the recognition that the best time to wake up is. Sleep cycles are controlled by the body.
One of the traditional ways to do this is to experiment, to keep a notebook under the bed, and to remember every morning’s experience. Try to sleep at the same time every night and wake up every morning at different times-five minutes is all you need to start seeing the difference. Learn that circadaytime rhythms are not the only ones that affect how you feel. If you do these experiments, remember that diet, hydration, exercise, and stress can affect the quality of sleep.
